About Fontina Cheese

Fontina is a rich, creamy cheese that originates from Italy’s Aosta Valley, near the Alps. Made from unpasteurized cow’s milk, it has a smooth, slightly elastic texture and a nutty, buttery flavor that deepens with age. Young Fontina is mild and melts easily, while aged Fontina becomes firmer and more intense in taste. Because of its excellent melting qualities, Fontina is often used in fondue, pasta, and grilled dishes. It’s also a popular table cheese, enjoyed with fruits, bread, and wine.

Pairings

Fontina pairs beautifully with crusty bread, mushrooms, and cured meats. It also complements fruits like apples and pears and melts perfectly in fondue or grilled sandwiches.

Fun fact:The original Fontina comes from Italy’s Aosta Valley and has been produced there since the 12th century. Its name is protected under the European “DOP” label, meaning only cheese made in that region can be called true Fontina. Browse All Cheeses →
